— Teaming With Districts to Help Students Learn How They Learn Best
Da Vinci focuses on delivering high-quality instruction designed to ensure the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and overall educational goals are met. Using our methods, every student we work with has the greatest likelihood of receiving specialized instruction delivered by highly qualified teachers to target and work towards deficits. We utilize a variety of special education supports and programs to serve students with disabilities and promote meaningful access, participation and progress in the general curriculum, including constant teacher services, paraprofessional support, resource room service and integrated co-teaching.
Our programs and alternative methods are used to modify the instructional approach and are customized to meet each of our students’ individual needs. We liaise with districts to provide an optimal learning environment for our students while supporting and instructing beyond their Individual Education Plan. We maintain and promote mindfulness to ensure that student, district, and familial concerns are acknowledged and addressed. We offer direct instruction in multi-sensory reading, writing, and math. Additionally, we offer resource room instruction in parochial, private, and public school settings. Our speech and language services provide additional support for students. Our NYS licensed staff support you with weekly communication and reports.
Da Vinci Collaborative seeks to be a collaborative partner with our school districts to offer a variety of services to help meet the needs of their students. We seek to be a help and asset to districts and partners to find solutions together. We offer direct services to districts as a way to help them better serve their special needs students and direct services includes anything that directly serves or interacts with the student such as direct instruction in specific academic subjects students are struggling with. In addition to direct instruction, we also offer indirect services including mentoring for teachers, professional development, assessments and consulting to help districts develop better policies and programs to serve their special needs students.
We also offer related services, which in special education means any type of service that helps the child better benefit from their special education programs. Some of these services at Da Vinci center include psychological services, therapy, mindfulness programs, speech and language services and many other resources. Overall, we seek to help districts have the resources that they need so that they can in turn better help their students in general education and special needs education settings.
Because each student’s learning style is different, accommodating a child’s unique learning needs through a customized approach is crucial to helping a student learn how they learn best. Da Vinci Collaborativeis best known for our ability to customize our approach to the needs of every individual student to ensure they have the greatest chance for success. We take the time to evaluate each individual student to help determine their strengths and challenges and design a customized plan to help them overcome these challenges and any deficits in their performance. We want each student to have the opportunity to thrive and find joy in their education even despite their challenges and we know that tailoring our approach to each student’s unique learning profile will help them find that joy and success. We give specialized instruction tailored to each student’s needs and provide one-on-one teaching and mentoring for students. We can also work with small groups of students who have similar needs and we seek to use our specialized instruction to help students find strategies to succeed both in their special education studies and in the general education classroom and to meet and even exceed their IEP goals.
We can be a partner in assessing students for disabilities and helping to form an effective IEP (Individual Education Program) for the student’s success. Our comprehensive assessments help evaluate a student’s abilities from many different angles to get a complete picture of where the student is currently at in their learning and abilities. This helps us set measurable and realistic goals with the IEP team to help the student make measured progress and find great improvement in their learning. We partner with parents, teachers and district representatives as part of a collaborative team to help create an IEP plan that will best guide the student to achieve their learning goals and we monitor and communicate student progress through weekly communication and reports.
Multi-sensory instruction is a modified teaching approach that helps a student learn through the use of all of their senses. Students who struggle to learn visually or auditorily, or who have dyslexia or other learning disabilities can often benefit from this type of instruction to better understand many academic subjects. Multi-sensory approaches can be used in one on one instruction or in small groups of students, and at Da Vinci Collaborative we offer multi-sensory instruction in reading, writing and math. For literacy skills such as reading, writing, and spelling we have highly qualified professionals who are trained in the Orton-Gillingham multisensory approach which is one of the most effective and scientifically validated approaches to multi-sensory instruction for literacy. And we offer other methodologies for instruction in math, which can be a very difficult subject for many students with special needs. Overall, we recognize that not all students learn in the same way and using innovative teaching techniques such as multi-sensory and other approaches can help students to learn the way they learn best.
Resource rooms can be a great additional service to help students with special needs succeed in their education. In a resource room situation, students take part of their day at school away from their general education classroom and work with a professional one on one or in a small group of students in a separate classroom often called the resource room. Resource room services can be provided in all types of school settings and at Da Vinci we offer resource room instruction in parochial, private and public schools.
Resource room instructors will help students who need individual instruction in certain subjects and will help implement the goals and plans designated in the student’s IEP. Experienced resource room teachers can also be a great asset to a student’s success and help them not only to progress in difficult subjects but also to gain learning and study skills that will help them in their regular classroom time. Resource room instructors should see themselves as an active partner in the student’s learning and should be fully invested in the student’s success. Often students may feel that going to a resource room will make them unpopular or not fit in with their peers and a resource room educator should understand this and should work with each student to help them feel comfortable and confident with themselves and their abilities. Choosing a resource room instructor who is understanding of their students’ needs and fully invested in their success will make the most difference in a student’s experience with their resource room instruction and how those skills translate to the regular classroom.
Direct district services often encompasses many services that can be provided to teachers within the district. Some of these services include professional development programs, workshops, and coaching for general education teachers to help them better understand and meet the needs of their special education students. Special education professionals can also offer teacher support in curriculum modification and providing other teaching resources. And they can partner with teachers to provide paraprofessional support and even integrated co-teaching options as permitted by the district. Da Vinci Collaborative offers all of these resources to teachers and seeks to be a partner and resource to help lighten the load on teachers time and resources while helping them to better meet their student’s needs.
Students can struggle with a wide variety of speech and language impediments and the effects of those impediments can range from minor to severe in terms of how they affect a student’s learning. Speech and language impairments generally develop and are first noticed during early childhood, and should be addressed as early as possible to avoid further difficulty for the student later on. Language disabilities can affect different aspects of speech and language, including articulation, fluency, voice, expression and comprehension. To address these different areas, speech and language services include a wide range of therapies and exercises to help students with these challenges work to overcome them and to communicate more effectively. Choosing a qualified education organization that includes speech and language services, such as Da Vinci Collaborative, can be a great resource to help your child succeed early on and develop the necessary communication skills for later on in their education and life.
